Canussio Castle

After the destruction of Aquileia by the Huns of Attila, in the mid-fifth century, Forum Iulii (this was the name assigned to the current Cividale by its founder Julius Caesar) had become the capital of the “X Region Venetia et Histria”, which stretched from the river Oglio in the whole of Istria, and had therefore assumed great importance, being situated at the meeting point of different routes that crossed the Julian Alps (note that Friuli, Venezia Giulia, and the Julian Alps are derived their name from the name Forum Iulii).
This historic building – property of the Canussio family – is considered the most extensive complex of civil ancient period architecture.
